The Stockholm World Water Week is a leading conference on global water issues that explores new ways of managing water to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges: from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity, and climate.

This year, the World Water Week begins today online as well as at Stockholm and will continue till September 1.

"Water is a fundamental resource enabling food and nutrition security. Although nutritious food is a basic human need, 3 billion people cannot afford a nutritious and healthy diet and 800 million are undernourished worldwide," the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) stated.

The world’s freshwater is under unprecedented pressure due to population growth and climate change. The climate crisis is also first and foremost a water crisis, FAO stated.

The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including floods and droughts, have highlighted food security vulnerabilities in rainfed agriculture, which constitutes 80% of the world’s productive land.

"The need for climate-resilient water and food system transformations is urgent. To address this global water crisis, World Water Week 2022 will focus on how we value water, shining a light on groundwater, the world’s most forgotten source of water," the FAO said.

Revealing and understanding the value of water will trigger much-needed decisions, innovations, and investments in managing our water better.

The events convened by the Land and Water Division of FAO at the Stockholm World Water Week 2022 will illustrate FAO’s engagement’s in promoting sustainable water management and in strengthening resilient agricultural production systems to enhance food security and sustainable livelihoods.

"World Water Week contributes to strengthening our joint efforts to highlight the urgency of addressing the water crisis and its centrality to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals," the FAO added.
