DHL has set a target to lower the company's carbon footprint to below 29 million tonnes by 2030. Besides, the company aims at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, said Kathrin Brost, VP, Global Head of GoGreen Program, DHL.

In an exclusive interview to Sustainability Middle East (SME), Ms Brost said: "This will cost DHL almost 7 billion euros over the next ten years to launch a long carbon intelligence program.

"DHL is very committed to create a sustainable future in all our regions. In order to do so we have developed a portfolio of different sustainability initiatives as a part of our ESG roadmap."

Speaking about decarbonisation of transport and logistics, Ms Brost said that to achieve this, “there are two things you can really do - you can either burn less or you can burn clean”.

Reusing and Reselling are Becoming a Core Focus: DHL Global Forwarding

In case of road transportation e-mobility (electrification) is going to play the key role. However, electrification requires battery and better charging infrastructure. In Dubai, DHL has launched an EV hub where batteries can be stored, repaired, recycled, and processed.

"In this way, we are actually helping to create a circular EV economy," she added.

In case of air and ocean freight use of sustainable fuel is pivotal. To foster this practice, DHL has developed an opportunity for customers (shippers) to benefit from sustainable fuel switch. MyDHLi offers an easy process to book and claim benefits.

"We are looking at an easy mechanism where shippers can decide that they want to decarbonise their supply chain by investing in sustainable fuels and in return claim the reductions," concluded Ms Brost.
