Green Riyadh: 1,350 km Water Network to Irrigate 7.5 Million Trees in Saudi Capital

A total of 1,350 km of water pipes are being installed as part of the "Green Riyadh" programme to transport 1.7 million cubic metres of treated water daily to irrigate 7.5 million trees in Riyadh.

The Green Riyadh programmes and other city development projects seek to create sustainable green spaces.

The primary pipes' diameters range from 1.2 to 2.4 metres, while minor networks cover every neighbourhood in Riyadh. Modern techniques and technology are being used during construction to expedite the process without disrupting city traffic.

Remote control and monitoring of the water networks is one of the technologies used for the innovative project aimed at sustainability.

Building water networks based on the sustainability principle and using 100% treated water for irrigation, which attests to the program's dedication to using renewable resources, is one of the key factors in achieving a Green Riyadh.

In order to expedite coordination efforts, overcome challenges, and address the crises associated with the deployment of irrigation water networks, a technical team made up of government and private sector organisations has been established.

Additionally, the team connects the programmes with the appropriate authorities for the implementation of public facilities, which were produced in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA), the Saudi Irrigation Organisation, and the National Water Company.

The goal of Green Riyadh is to plant more than 7.5 million trees throughout the Saudi capital, increase the vegetation cover to 9.1% of the city's total area, and increase the per-capita green area from 1.7 square metres to 28 square metres, or 16 times what it is presently.
