As Dubai celebrates 10 years of its ambitious Demand-Side Management (DSM) strategy, the results delivered have been very encouraging.

In a conversation with Sustainability Middle East, Majd Fayyad, DSM Strategy & Policy Lead, Supreme Council of Energy, said that the strategy enforces Dubai's goal of becoming a global leader and role model in energy efficiency.

"This year we celebrate 10 years of successful implementation of Demand Side Management Strategy, which aims at reducing the energy in what we demand in Dubai by 30% in 2030. It aims to promote efficient water resource management and increasing the number of electric and hybrid vehicles," Mr Fayyad said.

Since its launch, the DSM strategy has created significant economic benefits from job creation to improving economic resilience. The total cost savings from implementation of DSM strategy is about $2.45 billion.

The DSM strategy has also led to reduction in per capita consumption of electricity and water by 17% and 21 % compared to the 2010 levels. Similarly, carbon dioxide emissions have reduced by 14 million metric tonnes, resulting from avoided electricity and water generation.

"No doubt we still have more work ahead as we aim to advance energy efficiency levels to meet our net-zero goals by 2050. This has never been more important than now especially as we need to balance our economic growth and sustain our environment for future generations," Mr Fayyad concluded.
